There are several English words that have become too difficult for me to define. The dictionary gives them its own meaning, but to me it’s just another generic definition. Success is one of such words. It goes beyond being the achievement of something desired, planned, or attempted.
Success is Success. No words can define such a precious experience. It is a feeling that we have all experienced at one time or the other. But often times we take the little feats for granted, because we are waiting for the dynamite experience; moments when we are on the stage of life receiving all the accolades. Moments when we become the household name. Moments when everyone wants us to share our story. Moments when we become indispensable. Moments when our signatures become autographs. I am like that too, although I appreciate the little victories, I yearn for more.
However, the way I see it, not all of us would achieve that temerity of success, as it’s not for everyone. This is because although everyone has the ability to dream, and visualize, not everyone is disciplined enough to make the sacrifice necessary to dominate. We love to talk, and network, and attend programmes, and read books, but we forget that the successful man has more only because he his more. He doesn’t just talk intelligent, he acts intelligently. He doesn’t just write down his goals, he rolls his sleeves and gets his hands dirty.
To me, success is also relative. I don’t see those who chase other people’s goals as successful, even if they record achievements in such fields. It’s common to see people doing things just because others are doing them. Everyone wants to do photography, to write a book, to do this, that and the other, just because it works for another. This to me is wrong, because it robs such persons of an opportunity to be true to themselves, and create unique value. Don’t misunderstand me, I believe in being inspired by others, and it can never be wrong to see the light when another person holds a torch. However, when we go through frustration just because we are being a copycat, we ridicule even the success we achieve, because we are attaching it to something unnatural to our being.
Success as I see it is the ability to identify something we are passionate about, create value out of it, and share it for the benefit of others. You would be surprised by how much money you could make, how much fame you could get, how much autographs you would sign, and how many times you would be called to share your story; but even if this doesn’t happen you wouldn’t be crest fallen or have failed, because your competition is not anywhere in world but within you. And if you can surpass your own limits, and achieve your purpose, then you are a success.
And nothing can take that away from you.
